Net Loft Fiber & Friends 2014

Hello Friends of The Net Loft,
We are finally almost ready for online registration for Net Loft Fiber and Friends 2014.  I am so sorry to have been away from the blog for some time now.  We had a wonderful summer filled with all sorts of classes and activities, and my physical life was so occupied leaving little for my virtual life.  But alas,  next summer is closer than we think, and we have an absolutely great week planned.  Plan to take the week off and immerse yourself in our week of activities and programs. Bring a friend to share in the activities together. The website will be up and running next week for registration, but for now, take a moment to look over the schedule and class descriptions, so you will be ready when the site goes live.

Listed below is just a list of the scheduled classes.  There are more activities planned such as evening sessions, as well as an Adventure Day on Wednesday, all of  which will be described in detail on  the Registration Website.  The program actually begins on the evening of June 22, and ends with and evening program on the 29th (after a picnic potluck at Skater's Cabin).

Registration begins 6 a.m. Alaska Time on the 19th of November.  Earlybird registrants whose registrations amount to $250 or more receive a 10% discount on their total fees.
We will post registration website address on Monday the 18th.

We hope you will join us!   It will be a great week of spending time with friends, old and new, learning something new, and participating in the mutual exchange and love of fiber arts and friendship.  Any questions may be addressed to: info@netloftfiberandfriends.com

Hope you are having a pleasant fall.
with love and cozy days for knitting and handcrafts,

Net Loft Dotty

Class will be divided into two parts. The first half of the class will be spent creating the fusion with three layers of silk, and any embellishments you choose to imbed in the silk. Then we need to have plenty of time to let the fusion dry thoroughly, which could be challenging if it's raining in Cordova! So the second part of the class will be spaced a day after the first half. During the second session we will cut and sew the journal covers, and maybe do some additional embellishing on them.

Mitered squares are fun to make, and they are very popular today for a variety of knitting projects.

This classic patchwork design was inspired by the clean colors of Amish quilts.  Like a quilt, the rug is big, but ech square is small, so you can carry your knitting with you.  You start each square with the longest row   As you knit, the rows get shorter, and your knitting goes faster until there are no stitches left to bind off.

The workshop will cover the following topics:
    • Materials and supplies needed for rug knitting
    • Selecting and arranging colors
    • Construction of mitered squares
    • Options for decreases

Eskimo women in Alaska have been knitting quiviut (musk ox down) into lace since the 1960's.  In this workshop, we will examine their unique pattern stitches, inspired by Eskimo artifacts, and learn how to chart our own custom lace patterns by adapting designs from other art forms.  We will start by charting a basic diamond using yarn overs, then we will study several types of decreases and learn how each decrease works to create a different result with the same arrangement of yarn overs. We will also learn how to accentuate lace patterns with an outline stitch.

Each student will then design and chart several lace patterns, and knit a swatch of each to see what works and what doesn't work on the needles.  Finally, we will review basic patterns for lace projects such as scarves, stoles, and ponchos, and each student will work on designing a project.

In this class, we will learn how to work with multiple colors in a row without tangling the yarns or having long strands, using the technique that has been used traditionally in the Balkans and the Andes, and is similar to the Portuguese style of knitting.

In this technique, we will tension the yarn around our necks and learn how to work stockinette stitch from the wrong-side in circular knitting, with a purl stitch that will give you the most even colorwork tension you've ever seen.  We will also learn how to make a fascinating Bosnian toe -up sock that has a rectangular toe that is knitted flat, but without purls!  The rest of the sock is knitted in-the-round with an "after thought" short-row heel and decorative crochet finishing.

Donna has several examples of hand-knit Bosnian slipper socks that we will examine closely.

Level: Intermediate, need to know how to knit with double-pointed needles (or two circulars or magic loop), and have made at least 1 pair of socks (or 1 Christmas stocking)
